Biography

Professor Emeritus Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef has received his Ph.D. Degree in Structural Engineering from Cairo University in 1973. Since Feb, 1984 he became Professor of Strength and Properties of Materials, Structural Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, Egypt.
Professor Emeritus Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef – since the year 2000 and until now - is Chairman, The Permanent Organizing Committee of the international (Arab Structural Engineering Conference – ASEC).
He is also the Admin and Initiator of the Website (str.eng.cu.edu.eg/en) of the Structural Engineering Department, Cairo University, where he is totally responsible for initiating, developing, editing and updating all Department Website items and sections in both Arabic and English languages.
For twenty years, Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef was the Head of Materials Testing Lab, Cairo University (1985-2004).   He was also Chairman of the Structural Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University during the years (1999 – 2004).
Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef was, as well, Chairman of The Permanent Scientific Committee for Promoting Associate Professors in Structural and Construction Engineering, The Supreme Council of Universities (2004-2009).
Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef was a participant in many international and national scientific conferences and seminars, where he was invited in many cases to chair a session.  He is also an active reviewer and referee for numerous research papers published in scientific conferences and international and national journals in the area of civil and structural engineering.  He is the author of two books and more than 40 research papers published in peer reviewed national and international journals and conferences.
He has over 50 years of experience in the fields of Building and construction materials technology and research, Laboratory and field testing and calibration, Field technical inspection and reporting of quality control and assurance, Maintenance and rehabilitation of existing structures, Technical consultation on structural safety of different structures, Forensic engineering, Fire protection and fire safety of structures, and Arbitration in engineering and construction disputes.
Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef has been the Editor-in-Chief of many conference proceedings, and interim and final reports of research projects, including but not limited to:
- Conference Proceedings of ASEC8 held in Cairo, Egypt in 2000.  (Four volumes with a total of 2001 pages).   Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef was the Conference Chairman.
- Interim, Progress and Final Reports of a joint research project between Cairo University and University of New Hampshire, US, entitled "Appropriate Water Supply and Sanitation Technologies for Small Egyptian Rural Communities" and sponsored by US AID/FRCU, Supreme Council of Universities (1983-1984).  Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef was the research project Co-Principal Investigator.
- Progress and Final Reports of AID Urban Health Research Project, Section on “Urban Health Related Factors in Helwan” sponsored by US AID (1980-1981).  Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef was the research project Group Leader.
- Interim and Final Reports of a joint research project between Cairo University and MIT, US on The Housing and Construction Industry in Egypt (1977-1982). Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef was the research project Core Member and author of the Section on Materials and Techniques of Construction. 
Professor Mahmoud Aly Reda Youssef received an Appreciation Certificate by the Ministry of Defense, Armed Forces Engineers in 1979 for his services to his country.   He was awarded the National (State) Award for Engineering Sciences, National Academy of Science in 1982.
He was also decorated with the First Class Decoration of Sciences and Arts, awarded by the Egyptian President in 1984.
He was chosen, as well, among the Egyptian Prominent Distinguished Personalities included in the National Encyclopedia issued by The General Information Authority, 1989.  His research work in the field of Torsion of Reinforced Concrete is considered a major reference in both the European and French Codes on Reinforced Concrete.
