Dr Tian-Yi Song has a background in the research of composite structures, structural fire and post-fire performance and new materials. He obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees from Chang’an University in 2003 and 2006. Then he studied at Tsinghua University from 2006 and received his PhD in 2011, and he was awarded the 2011 Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award by Tsinghua University (at most three award winners for Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University each year). Dr Song joined the Western Sydney University (WSU) in 2012 as a Career Development Fellow. Prior to joining WSU, Dr Song worked as a Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore from April 2011 to September 2012. In March 2017, Dr Song was awarded The Title of Beijing Specially Recruited Experts by Organization Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, and joined Beijing University of Technology as an Associate Professor in Structural Engineering.
Dr Song has published 30 refereed journal papers and 25 refereed conference papers, including 22 international journal papers, 8 Chinese journal papers, 23 international conference papers and 2 Chinese conference papers. As of April 2020, his publications have received a total of 329 Web of Science Citations with a h-index of 11. Dr Song has published one scholarly book in 2012 at Chinese Science Press. This book is the first professional book which elaborates the fire safety design theory of composite structures in China, and the second edition was published in 2017. He has been awarded 9 patents by the Chinese National Bureau of Knowledge Property Right, and was involved in the development of 5 Chinese industry and local design standards as members of standard development committee.
Dr Song is an active reviewer for numerous international journals in the area of civil engineering, such as Journal of Structural Engineering (ASCE), Thin-Walled Structures, Engineering Structures, Construction and Building Materials and Journal of Constructional Steel Research. He has also had significant consulting experience on various projects, such as fire resistance design of columns and post-fire evaluation of high-rise buildings.
